Helping Seniors Prepare for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season can bring uncertainty for everyone, but older adults and individuals receiving care at home may face additional challenges. For seniors managing chronic conditions, mobility limitations, medication schedules, oxygen, CPAP, refrigerated medications, or other medical needs, storm preparation is about more than securing the home. It is about making sure the right supplies, contacts, plans, and support systems are in place before severe weather is approaching.
At Concierge Home Care, patient safety is always a priority. During hurricane season, our teams help educate patients and caregivers on practical steps they can take to prepare early, stay safe, and know who to call if their situation changes.
Why Early Planning Matters
Waiting until a storm is close can make preparation more difficult. Stores may run low on supplies, pharmacies may have limited access, transportation may become more challenging, and families may feel rushed when making important decisions.
For seniors and caregivers, early planning should include:
- Knowing the evacuation zone and local shelter options
- Signing up for local emergency alerts
- Creating a family communication plan
- Identifying who will check in before and after the storm
- Charging phones and backup power banks
- Refilling prescriptions early when possible
- Keeping an updated medication list available
- Storing important documents in a waterproof container
- Planning for pets, oxygen, medical equipment, mobility needs, or caregiver support
- Following guidance from local emergency officials
Prepare a 3–7 Day Emergency Kit
A well-stocked emergency kit can help seniors remain safer and more comfortable if normal routines are disrupted. Families should prepare supplies before hurricane season is active, not when a storm is already approaching.
Important items may include:
Food and water: Water for 3–7 days, non-perishable foods, a manual can opener, paper goods, and any special diet items.
Medications and medical supplies: A current medication list, a 7-day medication supply when possible, physician and pharmacy contact information, first aid supplies, diabetic supplies, wound care supplies, incontinence supplies, and backup batteries for medical devices.
Personal care items: Wipes, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, towels, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
Electronics: Flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, a fully charged phone, and a portable charger.
Important documents: Photo ID, insurance cards, Medicare or health plan cards, emergency contacts, medication list, advance directives if applicable, and key insurance or account information.
Do They Need Special Medical Needs Planning?
Some seniors may require additional planning if they would be unsafe without power, air conditioning, caregiver support, mobility assistance, or access to medical equipment.
Families should contact their county emergency management office before a storm to learn about Special Needs Shelter Program registration if the individual:
- Uses oxygen, CPAP, a nebulizer, or powered medical equipment
- Has limited mobility or needs help transferring
- Requires caregiver assistance
- Takes refrigerated medications
- Would be unsafe without power, air conditioning, or support
Registration and requirements may vary by county, so it is important to plan ahead and follow local guidance.

When to Notify the Care Team
Patients receiving care at home should notify their care team if their phone number or emergency contact changes, if they plan to evacuate, if they relocate temporarily, if they lose power, or if they have urgent care concerns.
For medical emergencies, always call 911.
